Kunming in 2 Days: Stone Forest, Highland Lakes & Eternal Spring

Known as the 'City of Eternal Spring' (Chuncheng) due to its pleasant year-round climate, Kunming is the gateway to China's colorful Yunnan Province. In 2025, Kunming ranked 18th among Chinese cities in attracting international tourists, drawing travelers with its diverse ethnic cultures, spectacular geological wonders, and scenic highland lakes. Here is a curated 2-day itinerary to make the most of your trip.

Day 1: City Lakes, Revolutionary History & Culinary Tradition

Morning: Green Lake Park & Yunnan Military Academy

Start your first morning at Green Lake Park (Cuihu), the cultural heart of Kunming. Located in the city center, this beautiful park is a series of interconnected ponds, willow-shaded pathways, and classical pavilions. It is an excellent place to observe local life as residents practice tai chi, sing Yunnan opera, or dance. If you visit in winter, you will also see thousands of Siberian black-headed gulls feeding on the lake.

Just west of the park, visit the Yunnan Military Academy. Easily recognizable by its striking mustard-yellow facade, this century-old institution was one of China's most important military academies in the early 20th century. Walk through its grand courtyard and exhibits to learn about its role in modern Chinese history.

Getting There: Take Metro Line 5 to Huashan West Road station, then walk north.

Midday: Over the Bridge Noodles at Jian Xin Yuan

For lunch, walk south to the central pedestrian area to visit Jian Xin Yuan, a legendary local restaurant chain established in 1906. Try their famous Crossing the Bridge Noodles (Guoqiao Mixian). A piping-hot bowl of chicken broth is served alongside thin slices of raw meat, quail eggs, vegetables, and rice noodles. You drop the ingredients into the soup to cook them instantly at your table.

Afternoon: Scenic Views at Dianchi Lake

In the afternoon, head south to Dianchi Lake, Yunnan's largest freshwater lake. Walk along the Haigeng Dam promenade for stunning views of the surrounding Western Hills. In winter, this is the prime location to buy bread crumbs and feed the Siberian gulls that hover close to the walkways. For panoramic views, you can take a cable car from the lakeside up into the Western Hills Scenic Area.

Getting There: Take Metro Line 5 directly to Baofeng or Dianchi International Convention Center station.

Day 2: Karst Wonders & The Giant Flower Sea

Morning & Afternoon: The Stone Forest (Shilin)

Dedicate your second day to the Stone Forest, located about 78 kilometers southeast of the city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an extraordinary geological wonder consisting of limestone karst formations that tower over the landscape like stone pine trees. Walk through the paved paths of the Greater Stone Forest to see the famous 'Ashima Stone' named after a legendary local Sani girl, then climb up to the pavilion viewing platforms for a sweeping view of the rock towers.

Getting There: Take a high-speed train from Kunming South Station to Shilin West Station (about 20 minutes), then take a local bus to the scenic area.

Evening: The Vibrant Dounan Flower Market

After returning to Kunming, head to the Dounan Flower Market in the evening. Dounan is the largest fresh cut flower market in Asia, exporting millions of blooms worldwide. While open during the day, the wholesale auction and trading start at 8:30 PM, transforming the multi-story market into a chaotic sea of color and fragrance. You can wander through endless rows of roses, lilies, carnations, and succulents sold for incredibly low prices.

Getting There: Take Metro Line 1 or Line 4 directly to Dounan Station.

Practical Tips for Kunming

  • Sun Protection: Located on a high plateau at 1,900 meters, Kunming has strong UV rays. Sunscreen and sunglasses are highly recommended even in cool seasons.
  • Siberian Gulls: If you want to see the Siberian black-headed gulls, plan your visit between November and March.
  • Noodle Etiquette: When eating Crossing the Bridge Noodles, always add the raw meat and eggs first, followed by the vegetables, and finally the rice noodles. Do not sip the soup immediately as a layer of oil keeps it boiling hot.
