Qingdao in 2 Days: European Architecture, Tsingtao Beer & Golden Beaches

Qingdao, which ranked 12th among Chinese cities in attracting international tourists in 2025, offers a unique coastal experience unlike anywhere else in China. Flanked by the Yellow Sea, this former German concession (1898–1914) is famous for its stunning juxtaposition of European-style red-tiled villas, modern skyscrapers, lush green hills, and golden beaches. It is also, of course, the birthplace of Tsingtao Beer. Here is how to make the most of two days in this refreshing coastal city.

Day 1: Historic Architecture, Beer History & Neon Lights

### Morning: Old Town Architecture & Zhanqiao Pier Start your morning in Qingdao's old town, near the main railway station. Walk down to Zhanqiao Pier, a 440-meter-long stone pier built in 1891. The octagonal pavilion at the end, Huilan Pavilion, is the official symbol of the city and is featured on every bottle of Tsingtao Beer. Stroll along the pier to enjoy views of the ocean and the city's red-roofed heritage buildings.

Afterward, hike up to Signal Hill Park. The short climb to the three red domes rewards you with a 360-degree panoramic view of the old town, showcasing the city's famous architectural identity: "red tiles, green trees, blue sea, and blue sky."

**Getting There:** Take Metro Line 3 to Zhanqiao (Qingdao Station) or Line 4 to Signal Hill (Daxue Road).

### Midday: Tsingtao Beer Museum Head to Dengzhou Road (known locally as Beer Street) to visit the Tsingtao Beer Museum. Set inside the original red-brick brewery built by German and English brewers in 1903, the museum combines historical exhibits with active, modern bottling lines. The tour highlights include learning about historical brewing techniques and, most importantly, enjoying two complimentary glasses of fresh, unfiltered raw beer (yuanjiang) direct from the tanks, paired with beer-flavored peanuts.

### Afternoon: Badaguan Scenic Area (Eight Passes) Spend your afternoon in Badaguan, a peaceful, leafy residential quarter built in the early 20th century. The neighborhood's streets are named after ancient Chinese mountain passes, and it features over 200 historic villas in German, Russian, English, and French styles. Walk along the tree-lined avenues to the seaside and visit the Huashi (Stone) Building, a granite castle-like villa built for a Russian baron that offers lovely views of the bay.

### Evening: May Fourth Square & Skyline Light Show As dusk falls, head to May Fourth Square in the modern High-Tech business district. The plaza is anchored by the swirling red steel sculpture, "Wind of May." On Friday and Saturday evenings, the skyscrapers lining the bay come alive with a spectacular, coordinated neon light show. Celebrate your first evening at a seaside restaurant feasting on Qingdao's famous garlic clams (gala) paired with fresh draft beer sold in bags (a local tradition!).

Day 2: Sacred Mountains & Coastal Trails

### Morning & Midday: Mount Lao (Laoshan) Day Trip Take a morning trip to Mount Lao (Laoshan), a scenic granite mountain rising directly out of the Yellow Sea. Laoshan is celebrated as one of the birthplaces of Taoism and is known for its mystical mist-shrouded peaks and ocean views. Take the high-speed metro (Line 11) to the mountain entry, and choose the Southern route (Taiqing Line) to visit the Taiqing Palace, a massive Taoist temple complex with 2,000 years of history nestled against the cliffs. Hike or take the cable car to enjoy panoramic ocean vistas.

**Getting There:** Take Metro Line 11 (Langu Express) from downtown to Mount Lao (Laoshan) station, then transfer to the park shuttle bus.

### Afternoon: Shilaoren (Old Stone Man) Beach On your way back from Laoshan, stop at Shilaoren Beach, Qingdao's largest sandy beach. It is named after a prominent offshore rock formation that resembles an old man sitting in the surf. Spend your afternoon walking on the soft sand, enjoying coffee at a beachside café, or trying water sports. It is a favorite local spot for relaxing and people-watching.

### Evening: Craft Beer & Seafood Dinner End your trip in the modern district. Qingdao's modern craft beer scene has boomed alongside its industrial giant. Visit a local brewpub to sample IPAs and stouts alongside fresh local seafood like grilled mackerel and sea cucumber.
