Xi'an Practical Tips: Transit, Visa & Business Essentials
Xi'an Practical Tips
Planning a trip to Xi'an? This guide covers all the practical essentials — from airport transfers to mobile payments — so you can focus on enjoying the ancient capital.
Getting to Xi'an
By Air
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) is located 47 km northwest of the city center. It handles flights from major international cities including Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, and London.
Airport to City Center:
- Airport Express Metro (Line 14): The fastest option, taking about 40 minutes to reach Beidajie station downtown. Trains run from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Cost: ¥16-21.
- Airport Shuttle Bus: Multiple routes to different areas of the city. Runs 24 hours. Cost: ¥25-30.
- Taxi/DiDi: About 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. Cost: ¥120-180.
By High-Speed Rail
Xi'an North Railway Station (西安北站) is a major hub on China's HSR network:
- Beijing → Xi'an: 4.5 hours
- Shanghai → Xi'an: 6 hours
- Chengdu → Xi'an: 3 hours
- Zhengzhou → Xi'an: 2 hours
The station connects to Metro Lines 2 and 14. Book tickets on 12306.cn or Trip.com up to 15 days in advance.
Visa-Free Transit
Xi'an is eligible for China's 144-hour visa-free transit policy. Citizens of 54 countries (including the US, UK, EU, Japan, Korea, Australia) can stay up to 6 days without a visa if:
- You are transiting to a third country/region
- You have a confirmed onward ticket
- You hold a valid passport from an eligible country
You must enter and exit through designated ports. Xi'an Xianyang Airport is a designated entry/exit point. As of 2024, the policy allows travel within Shaanxi province.
Money & Payments
Mobile Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted virtually everywhere. International visitors can now link Visa/Mastercard to Alipay via the "Tour Pass" feature. Set this up before arrival.
Cash: Carry some RMB cash (¥500-1000) as backup for small vendors and taxis. ATMs accepting international cards are available at airports, banks, and major hotels.
Credit Cards: Major hotels and upscale restaurants accept Visa/Mastercard, but most smaller venues do not.
SIM Cards & Internet
Purchase a prepaid SIM card at the airport from China Mobile, China Unicom, or China Telecom. Prices start at about ¥100 for 7 days with 10GB data. Alternatively, rent a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Note that Google, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are blocked — download a VPN before arrival if needed.
Business Travel
Xi'an is a major tech and aerospace hub in western China. Key business districts include:
- Xi'an Hi-Tech Industries Development Zone (高新区): Home to Samsung's semiconductor plant, Huawei, and ZTE offices
- Qujiang New District (曲江新区): Growing creative and cultural industries zone
- Xi'an International Trade & Logistics Park: Important logistics hub for the Belt and Road Initiative
Business Hotels: Sofitel Legend People's Grand Hotel (city center), Westin Xi'an (Qujiang), and Hilton Xi'an High-Tech Zone are popular choices for business travelers.
Safety & Health
Xi'an is very safe for international travelers. Tap water is not drinkable — buy bottled water. Air quality can be poor in winter; check AQI forecasts and bring a mask. The main tourist areas have English signage and tourist police stations.
